Taiwanese night markets (夜市)

Night markets are where Taiwan snacks in the evening: streets of food stalls that open around dusk and run until about midnight. Most dishes cost NT$40–100 and come in small portions, so you can walk, share and try several in one evening.
Searching “night market” on Google Maps shows the famous ones that tourists have reviewed. Searching 夜市 also finds the neighbourhood ones — including those that set up only on certain days of the week.

What to eat at a night market
When are night markets open?
Most open around 5–6 pm and run until about midnight; they are busiest from 7 to 10 pm. Some markets set up only on certain days of the week and individual stalls take days off, so check the market on Google Maps before you go.
How do you eat at a night market?
Walk and graze. Buy one thing at a time, pay cash at each stall and share as you go — portions are small. Some stalls have a few stools; otherwise people eat standing nearby. Bins are rare, so keep a bag for your rubbish.
Which night markets are the most famous?
Shilin, Raohe and Ningxia in Taipei, Fengjia in Taichung, Garden Night Market in Tainan, Ruifeng and Liuhe in Kaohsiung, and Miaokou in Keelung. Every town has smaller ones too, and searching 夜市 finds the one closest to you.
